Nature rarely follows a schedule, but this morning it was perfectly on time. Our tracking team, led by Senior Guide Gentil, moved through the lower bamboo zone of Volcanoes National Park when the vocalizations of the Segasira family signaled something unusual.
Its eyes were open, wide with the first sights of the forest canopy. The mother was being closely guarded by the dominant Silverback, who watched our group with a calm but firm authority. New births like this are vital markers of the success of the "Extreme Conservation" model Rwanda has pioneered.
Through revenue sharing from luxury tourism, the people living around the park are the first to celebrate these new arrivals, knowing that their future—and the future of the primates—is intertwined.
